Research protocols may require animals to receive special or restricted diets and/or water. The requirement for altering an animal's standard diet/water must be approved in the investigator's IACUC protocol before any change can be made. If the dietary/water change is not in the currently approved IACUC protocol, the investigator must submit an amendment (contact the IACUC office at 632-9036 or see www.research.sunysb.edu/animforms/animamend.html).

After IACUC approval is received, the investigator should fill out the "Special Food/Water Request" form (available in the DLAR main office or click here). The form should be submitted for review to a DLAR veterinarian. The veterinarian will inform the DLAR colony manager who will post the request form in the animal room. She will work with the animal technician working in the room to assure that the new diet/water changes are implemented.
